DockStar Smart Thruster
A deck or transom-mounted thruster that clips onto a track, runs off its own battery, and lifts off between trips. It is one of only two mounting categories that puts no hole below your waterline, and the reason people find it is almost always the same: they have priced a tunnel install and did not like the number.
How this review was made, so you can judge it. Most of it is documentary: what Dockstar publish, what owners have reported on the forums going back to 2018, and what nobody has published at all. Every figure is attributed, and where their own site contradicts itself we say so rather than quoting the flattering number.
One disclosure that matters more than the usual one. The owner of this site fitted a second-generation Smart Thruster to his own 42 ft trawler in the summer of 2026 and rates it. That is worth knowing twice over: it means somebody here has actually handled the thing, and it means we are not a neutral party. One boat is one data point, so the strengths and limitations below are still built from the documents and from other owners rather than from our own docking — but you should weigh the enthusiasm accordingly.

Those inconsistencies are not a gotcha, they are a buying hazard: a search will land you on one of their older pages quoting 65 lb and a three-hour charge. Their current spec is here and it is the one to work from.
The part their own site buries
Dockstar's strongest argument sits on a page that is not in their navigation and not in their sitemap. Buy two units — one bow, one stern — and the remote that ships with every unit already runs both. Push the bow one way and the stern the other and the boat rotates about its middle. Push both the same way and it moves sideways. A single tunnel thruster at the bow can do neither.
Dockstar make this argument themselves, and the argument is sound, but their published version of it is not usable: it runs the arithmetic on the old 65 lb unit rather than the 90 lb one they sell now, and it prints no boat length and no distances. Turning moment is thrust times distance from the center of rotation, so without the distances the result cannot be checked by anyone. Here is the same comparison with the current thrust figure and every distance stated.
One 90 lb unit at the stern comes close to a 150 lb tunnel at the bow, despite having little more than half the push, because it sits on a longer lever. Run both together and the pair produces about 67% more turning moment than the tunnel.
The pair figure needs no assumption about where the boat turns. Two equal, opposite pushes at different points make what engineers call a couple, and a couple turns the boat equally hard whatever point you measure from. It is simply 90 lb across the 39 ft between the two units: 3,510 lb·ft, the same figure the bars above reach by adding two lever arms. Move the center of rotation anywhere you like and that number does not move.
A 40 ft boat, stopped, turning about its middle. Bow unit 1 ft aft of the stem, stern unit on a transom track, tunnel 6 ft aft of the stem — far forward for a tunnel, which favors the tunnel here. The tunnel's figure does depend on where the center sits, so the comparison does too: amidships is the least favorable case we could have chosen, because a boat with headway turns about a point further forward, which shortens the tunnel's lever and not the pair's. Both thrust figures are the manufacturers' own rated numbers, with no derating applied to either side. Change a distance and every figure changes, which is why they are printed rather than assumed.
What this does not show matters as much as what it does. A tunnel still gives better direct sideways push, more consistent immersion, and is probably better at pinning a boat against a dock in a hard breeze. Rotational authority is one axis, not the whole picture. The fairest summary of this product we have read comes from an owner rather than from anyone selling it:
“the Dockstar passes the sniff test. It clearly has tradeoffs like anything else, but I think it deserves consideration as a useful tool for rotational control and low-speed maneuvering without cutting large holes in the hull. I don't think it overrides the laws of physics or replaces seamanship.”

His last point is the one to hold on to. Wind load rises with the square of wind speed, so twenty knots is four times the force of ten and thirty knots is nine times. Past a certain day, no thruster of any kind is the answer, and the honest question is not which product wins but which conditions you actually dock in.
Strengths and limitations
Sourced both sides. Nothing here is our opinion of the product — it is what the documents say, what owners said, and what we could not find published anywhere.
What holds up
- Fastener holes only. No tunnel, no hole below the waterline, and no haul-out to fit it — one of only two mounting categories that can say that.
- It comes off the boat entirely and goes in a locker. Nothing permanent is done to a hull you may want to sell.
- The battery is inside the unit. No boat wiring, no cable runs, no charger install, and it does not draw on your house bank.
- The same unit works at either end, and the remote that ships with every unit already drives two — top four buttons bow, bottom four stern.
- "All the hardware is SS… The mounting system is very robust."
- A bow and stern pair costs $8,650 and covers both ends of the boat — less than one professionally installed tunnel thruster costs at one end.
What does not
- "We like the dockstar on calmer days, but if you get in any sort of wind it will not be enough."
- The same owner's size verdict: "For a 26ft boat its perfect but id say 32 ft and bigger you need more."
- "You will have to remove them each time you dock or someone will just remove them for you." Theft was raised in 2018 and Dockstar sell no lock or security accessory.
- Ten minutes of running per charge, and five hours to recharge from empty. Enough for several dockings; not a reserve you can lean on.
- Three knots maximum while deployed, not suitable for fast V-hulls that cannot raise it clear, and bow installations are for displacement hulls only.
- They publish no wind limit, no current limit and no thrust-to-boat-weight guidance anywhere. The one number a buyer most needs is the one number missing.
- There is no dealer or installer network. If you cannot or will not do the install yourself, their site has no answer for you.
- Anchor fouling on a bow install was raised by owners in 2018 and we could find no published answer to it.
- Returns carry a 20% restocking fee and you pay return shipping.
Who it is for
Dockstar's own answer, and it is an unusually honest one for a product page: "Old Salts keeping their independence as time takes its toll", solo captains, sailboat racers, and "boat owners who never thought thrusters were 'for boats like mine'". That is a real description of who buys this.
Reading their documents and the owner reports together, it fits best on a boat under about 32 feet, or a heavier boat in genuinely sheltered conditions, or as a stern unit on a boat that already has a tunnel bow thruster and simply lacks stern control. It fits sailboats particularly well, because it comes off for race day and leaves nothing behind — a tunnel is a decision you cannot take back for a weekend.
It does not fit a heavy, high-windage boat in an exposed slip. The 34-footer owner above told you that himself, and no amount of arithmetic about lever arms changes it.

Tracks run from $320 to $660 depending on where the unit mounts, and a custom track is quoted individually. Note that they size the track from photographs and measurements of your boat rather than selling it off a shelf, which is why there is no checkout button anywhere on their site.
What their site does not tell you
We read every page. These are the questions a serious buyer will have that Dockstar leave open, and you should ask them on the phone before you pay a deposit.
- Will 90 lb move my boat? No thrust-to-weight guidance is published anywhere. Bring your displacement and your usual docking wind to the call.
- What is the deposit, and what is the lead time? Their process hinges on a deposit reserving a production slot. Neither figure is published.
- What does shipping cost? "Plus shipping" appears throughout; no number does.
- Which track fits a bow between 58 and 60 inches? Standard says 60 or under, Extended says 58 or over. The overlap is unresolved.
- What holds it on? Two screws top and bottom, with no published guidance on backing plates or core condition. Worth asking if your deck or transom is cored.
- What happens if it is stolen? A $3,950 unit hanging on a transom in a public marina, with no lock offered.
